Volleyball Downs Bucknell 3-1 to Win Third Straight

NEW YORK – The Fairfield University volleyball team won their third consecutive match by edging Bucknell University 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-21) this morning at the Columbia Invitational. Freshman Megan Theiller posted her second straight double-double, finishing with 13 kills and a career-high 20 digs.

Sophomore Megan O'Sullivan registered a career-high 12 kills on .308 hitting and added three total blocks. Senior Caitlin Stapleton recorded double-digit kills for the fourth straight match, finishing with a match-high 14 kills. Senior Marilyn Peizer was also in double figures, tallying 11 kills in addition to three total blocks.

Setter Carsen Mata notched her fourth consecutive double-double with a career-high 50 assists and 14 digs. Mata also had two blocks and two aces.

Senior Lindsay Weaver posted six total blocks in addition to nine kills. Defensively, senior Camille Coffey tied a career-high with 26 digs while freshman Sydney Buckley tallied 17 digs to set a new career best.

The Bison overcame an early four-point deficit to tie the first set at 12-12. The two teams proceeded to go point-for-point until the score rested at 23-23. Bucknell took advantage of a pair of attack errors by the Stags to eke out the 25-23 win.

In the second set, the Stags opened up a 14-7 lead but the Bison countered with a 10-3 run to tie it 17-17. With Bucknell leading by a point, a kill by Peizer knotted the stanza at 23-23. Theiller followed with a kill to put Fairfield ahead and she then teamed with Weaver for a block to give the Stags the victory.

The fourth set was a little closer with eight ties and two lead changes. With the score tied 14-14, Fairfield put together a 6-0 run. Bucknell countered with a 6-0 run of its own to tie the score at 20-20. After exchanging points, a Bison service error shifted momentum and the Stags capitalized. A Peizer kill put Fairfield ahead to stay while Weaver closed it out with a pair of kills.

The Stags out-blocked the Bison, 9-5, and had a 92-75 advantage in digs and a 60-44 advantage in digs.
