Field Hockey Defeats Siena 3-1

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team defeated Siena, 3-1, this afternoon at University Field. Junior Kaitlyn Taddeo, sophomore Ann Burgoyne, and rookie Marta Laginja tallied one goal apiece for Fairfield.

The Stags got off to a good start, taking the first four shots of the game within the first 10 minutes. Play continued back and forth until Laginja put Fairfield on the board at 32:28. The unassisted goal was scored when she shot from the left side of the circle. Neither team was able to score in the remainder of the first half, giving the Stags a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

The second half started much like the first, with Fairfield taking the first two shots. At 43:14, Taddeo netted her first goal of the season, to give the Stags a 2-0 lead. A little over three minutes later, Siena's Megan Bohse put the Saints on the board. The goal was scored off a penalty corner and was assisted by Fabiana Citro and Katherine Bowie. Both teams continued to battle until Burgoyne found the back of the net when she put back her own rebound, at 68:14. Despite two more shot for Siena, neither team was able to score again, sealing a final 3-1 victory for the Stags. 

Goalkeepers Caitlin Bennett and rookie Emma Ball, split time in the net for Fairfield. Bennett tallied one save on the day while Ball totaled two. Siena's Madi Gilbert recorded seven saves. The Stags outshot the Saints 18-7 and had a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Fairfield (4-5) will continue action on the road. The Stags will stop at Monmouth on Friday, September 26 before traveling to Delaware on Sunday, September 28.
