Box Score PHILADELPHA, Pa. – The Fairfield University field hockey team fell to Penn, 4-2, this afternoon at the Ellen Vagelos Field. Sophomore Ann Burgoyne scored both goals for the Stags while goalkeeper Emma Ball tallied 10 saves.
Fairfield's defense started off strong, keeping the ball out of the net, until Penn's Alexa Hoover scored the first goal of the game at 18:57. About four minutes later, the Quakers' Emily Corcoran scored from the middle of the circle, off a pass from her right by Alex Iqbal, to put Penn up 2-0. Burgoyne put the Stags on the board when she scored off a pass from Felicitas Heinen at 33:45. Penn took a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
Both teams battled for much of the second half until Corcoran tallied another goal for the Quakers at 59:12. Burgoyne answered with her second goal of the game just 43 seconds after Penn's last goal. She scored from the middle of the circle, off a pass from Kaitlyn Taddeo, to make the score 3-2. The final goal of the game was netted by Hoover at 61:16, sealing a 4-2 victory for Penn.
Ball faced 14 shots on the day, stopping 10, while Penn's Allison Weisenfels made three saves. The Stags were out-shot 19-7 and Penn had a slight 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Fairfield (2-4) is back in action on September 14 when the Stags take on Columbia at 1pm. Fairfield will then return home to University Field on September 19 to take on Sacred Heart at 3pm.
