HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Fairfield University field hockey team fell to Hofstra, 2-1, in overtime this afternoon at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Rookie Marta Laginja scored the lone goal for the Stags while goalkeeper Emma Ball made five saves.

Fairfield started off strong, taking the first shot of the game just 1:40 into the first half. After a penalty corner by the Stags, Hofstra answered with a goal by Charlotte Loehr off a penalty corner at 10:05. After a shot from the Stags, the Pride took four shots which were kept out of the net by Fairfield's defense. Play continued with neither team having a solid opportunity to score for the next 16 minutes. Hofstra took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The second half started much like the first with Fairfield's Ann Burgoyne taking the first shot at 37:48. Both teams battled to score for the next 20 minutes but neither found the back of the net until Laginja put Fairfield on the board, with her first collegiate goal, at 58:50. The goal was assisted by Felicitas Heinen and tied the game at 1-1.

Despite two more shots for the Pride, neither team was able to score again in regulation. About four minutes into overtime, Hofstra's Jonel Boileau scored, off a pass from Schoen, to seal a 2-1 victory for the Pride.

Ball faced seven shots on the day, stopping five, while Hofstra's Carys Swan made three saves. The Stags were slightly out-shot 13-10 but had a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Fairfield (2-3) is back in action on September 12 when the Stags take on Penn at 4pm. Fairfield will travel to Columbia on September 14 before returning to University Field on September 19 to take on Sacred Heart at 3pm.
