FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The softball team opened the home portion of its 2014 schedule this afternoon against Marist College but the debut did not go as it had hoped, falling to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent by a 10-0 score. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed to Monday due to rain.
The Red Foxes scored their runs in bunches, pushing four runs home in the second inning and six more runs in the sixth. Marist used the long ball for most of its offensive production, starting with a three-run homer from Krysten Van Natta with two outs. The visitors tacked on six more runs in their final at-bat of the day, the biggest hit coming off the bat of Taylor Kuzma, who launhed a grand slam with one out.
The Stags offense came from Kristen Filicia, who led off the game with a base hit. Sammy Ruffolo replaced Filicia on a fielder's choice, and she was replaced on Lauren Liseth's fielder's choice. The senior stole a base and would reach third base on an errant throw from the catcher. The Stags would not have another base runner the rest of the way as pitcher Janine Lalli would retired 18 straight Fairifeld hitters over the six-inning game.
Fairfield will host Marist again on Monday to complete the MAAC doubleheader. Sunday's match up with Wagner was postponed due to weather and field conditions.
