No. 17/18 Men's Lacrosse Falls at Hofstra 9-7

Box Score HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – No. 17/18 Fairfield University men's lacrosse suffered their first loss of the season this afternoon as they were edged 9-7 by Hofstra University. Dave FlemingEric Warden, and Drew Federico each scored twice for the Stags.
 
Hofstra (1-2) took 1-0 lead at 12:18 in the first quarter on a goal by Korey Hendrickson while Brier Davis made it 2-0 with 1:51 left in the period. Federico put the Stags on the board with 48 second left in the first quarter, putting home a pass from Jake Knostman.
 
In the second quarter, Hofstra pushed its lead to 3-1 on a goal my Sam Llinares but Fleming answered with an unassisted tally at 8:37 to make it a one-goal game. After exchanging goals, the Pride closed out the final three minutes with a pair of goals to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.
 
The Pride extended its lead to 8-3 with goals at 9:18 and 9:12 in the third quarter. Federico tallied his second goal of the game a minute later to make it 8-4. After a goal by Torin Varn, Warden scored at the 6:49 mark to pull the Stags within 9-5.
 
Fleming scored his second goal of the game just two minutes into the fourth quarter to cut the gap to three goals. Both teams went scoreless until 3:33 when Warden ripped home his second goal of the day to pull the Stags within 9-7. Hofstra staved off the Fairfield attack in the final minutes of the game to come away with the win.
 
Senior goalie Jack Murphy made eight save with two ground balls while Hofstra's Chris Selva made 10 saves. Rookie Jay Walsh had a season-best four caused turnovers with two ground balls for the Stags. Senior Greg Perraut had three ground balls.
 
The Pride had three extra-man opportunities but the Stags held them scoreless to remain perfect in their man-down defensive efforts this season. Opponents are 0-for-7 while a man-up.
 
Fairfield (2-1) is off until March 4 when the Stags host Providence College. It is the first of four-straight home games for the Stags in the month of March.
