Women's Basketball Tops Siena 57-47 to Win Seventh Straight

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Four Stags scored in double figures as the Fairfield University women's basketball team defeated Siena College, 57-47, this afternoon to win their seventh straight game. Fairfield, which has won 10 of its last 12 games, improves to 19-8 overall and to 14-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
 
Senior Katie Cizynski posted her second-straight double-double, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds. She has 10 double-doubles this season and has scored in doubles figures in 19 consecutive games.
 
Senior Alexys Vazquez scored in double figures for the fifth time in the last six games, finishing with 12 points. She had four three-pointers on the day to bring her season total to 80. Vazquez is now five threes away from breaking the single season record of 84 set by Holli Tapley in 2000-01.
 
Junior Felicia DaCruz finished with 13 points and eight assists while sophomore Kristin Schatzlein had 13 points and seven rebounds.
 
Siena (7-20; 2-16 MAAC) used a 9-0 run midway through the first half to overtake the Stags, 25-22. Schatzlein answered with a three-pointer at 4:22 to tie it up, but a lay-up by Emia Willingham 13 seconds later but the Saints back on top. A steal by Christelle Akon-Akech led to a jumper by Cizynski which retied the game with 3:15 left in the half. A jumper by DaCruz at 2:21 put Fairfield ahead, 29-27. The score would remain that way as the two teams went into halftime.
 
Vazquez opened the second half with a three-pointer from way downtown while DaCruz followed with a jumper in the paint to push the lead to 34-27 at 19:17. DaCruz helped the Stags make it a 40-30 advantage at 14:46 by successfully converting a free throw after being fouled on a made lay-up.
 
Siena whittled down the lead to 42-37 on a three-pointer by Kanika Cummings at 11:22. But, Vazquez silenced the run with her fourth three-pointer of the game at 10:57. The Stags worked their way back out to a double-digit lead as DaCruz made it 51-39 with a lay-up at 6:55. The Saints cut the gap to single digits, 53-44, on a bucket by Ida Krough but DaCruz hit a pair of free throws with 2:15 to return the lead to 11 points.
 
Fairfield shot 40.8 percent from the field, connecting on 20 of 49 field goal attempts while holding Siena to a 28.8 percent shooting (17-for-59). The Saints held a 40-32 advantage in rebounds.
 
Fairfield closes outs the regular season next weekend in Western New York. The Stags stop at Canisius on February 28 followed by Niagara on March 2.
