Men's Basketball Falls To Albany 77-66

Box Score

ALBANY, N.Y. –  Ten three pointers kept the Fairfield University men's basketball team in the game but it was not enough to overcome the University at Albany as the Great Danes posted a 77-66 win at the SEFCU Arena. Kevin Degnan made three of those three pointers, one of seven Stags to make a basket from behind the arc on the night.

Fairfield's offense struggled in the opening minutes of the game, trailing 4-0 before Amadou Sidibe's hook off glass put the Stags on the board. The deficit reached five points at 7-2 but Degnan made his first three-point attempt to close the gap to two points. It was the second straight game that Degnan netted his first three point attempt.

As was the case against Belmont, Degnan was a key factor in the Stags offense as the freshman scored four of the team's next six points, the last of which brought the score to 13-11 13:43 on the clock. The Great Danes tallied the next five points to regain control at 18-11 with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Fairfield rallied with seven straight points to knot the game at 18-18, a run that was highlighted by Steve Johnston's three-point shot. Mike Kirkland added a pair of free throws and Jerome Segura's teardrop was also part of the run. Albany answered with eight of its own points over the next two minutes to grab its biggest lead of the half at 26-18. The Stags would come a few points closer by the half, going into the locker room down 34-29.

Albany used the three pointer to build on its five-point lead, all of which came from Evan Singletary. The junior matched a three pointer that Degnan hit a few seconds earlier that mad e the score 41-32 with 17 minutes remaining. Singletary would go on to net three more three pointers over the five minutes that raised the Albany lead to 57-40 with 12 minutes left in the game.

Fairfield put together a mini run midway through the half as Demarcus Threatt and Marcus Gilbert each scored three points to bring the lead down to 13 points at 59-46 at the 9:39 mark. Albany took away that run with seven consecutive points over the next four minutes.

Degnan would add another three pointer to his total just after Jerome Segura netted a long-range jumper that cut the lead to 16 but Singletary responded with a pair of free throws to stop the Stags spurt. Four of Fairfield's last five baskets were from behind the three point line helping the Stags climb back in the game before falling 77-66.

Degnan reached double figures for the second straight game off the bench, finishing with a team-high 13 points. The Stags tied shot 46 percent from three point range (10 of 22). Marcus Gilbert also reached double figures with 11 points, nine of which came in the second half.
