HAMDEN, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's basketball team completed the season sweep of Quinnipiac University by defeating the Bobcats, 61-52, this afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the win, the Stags move into third place in the MAAC standings with a 7-3 record while the Bobcats drop to fourth with a 7-4 league record.
Junior
Felicia DaCruz tied a career-high with 19 points, going 5-for-10 from the field and 8-for-11 from the free throw line. Senior
Katie Cizynski recorded her seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Cizynski, who has scored in double figures in 11-straight, went 6-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
Sophomore
Kristin Schatzlein also scored in double digits, finishing with 13 points on a 6-for-12 effort from the field. Senior
Brittany Obi-Tabot posted 10 rebounds and nine points, just missing a double-double.
Fairfield (12-7; 7-3 MAAC) led from start to finish. The Stags scored the first eight points of the day and later pushed their lead to 14-2. Quinnipiac narrowed the gap to 19-18 on a basket by Nikoline Ostergaard at 9:02 but DaCruz answered with a three-pointer. A pair of free throws by Cizynski at 6:10 would make the score 24-18. It was the last time either team would score until the 2:28 mark when Quinnipiac ended the drought with a basket. Fairfield took a 28-22 lead into the break.
Quinnipiac (12-9; 7-4 MAAC) started the second half by cutting the gap to 28-26 on a lay-up by Brittany McQuain at 17:07. Fairfield quickly responded with an 8-0 run, which included six points by Cizynski, to push its lead to 36-26. The Stags continued to control as a jumper by DaCruz at 6:37 made it a 44-33 game. A late push by the Bobcats pulled them within four points, 49-45, after a lay-up by Brianah Ramos with 1:53 left. That's as close as Quinnipiac would get as Fairfield held them off for the win.
Fairfield shot 42.0 percent (21-for-50) from the floor and Quinnipiac shot 30.8 percent (21-for-68). Rebounds were even at 41 apiece. The Stags committed 11 turnovers while the Bobcats had 10. The difference in the game was at the free throw line, as Fairfield went 18-for-26 while Quinnipiac went to the line just eight times, making six.
For Quinnipiac, Jasmine Martin has 18 points while Samantha Guastella had 10 points.
The victory was Fairfield's 300th MAAC win in program history. In 33 seasons a member of the MAAC, the Stags have forged a 300-195 record in league play.
Fairfield is back in action on January 30 when it travels to Iona College to close out the season series.
