Field Hockey Falls in a 4-3 Decision to No. 3 Prin

PRINCETON, N.J.
- The Fairfield University field hockey team fell to No. 3 Princeton University, 4-3, this afternoon at Bedford Field. Both Felicitas Heinen and Julie de Paeuw each scored a goal for the second straight game while rookie Ann Burgoyne scored her first collegiate goal.

The Stags battled the defending national champion Tigers to a scoreless first half. Goalkeeper Caitlin Bennett faced six shots and tallied six saves for the first half of play.

Fairfield got off to a great start in the second half, as de Paeuw tallied the first goal of the game at 39:49. Princeton answered with a goal by Theresa Benvenuti off a penalty corner about three minutes later.

Shortly after, Sidney Kirby gave Princeton the lead, 2-1, when she deflected a shot into the goal. The Tigers added a third goal at 44:39, but Fairfield battled back as Burgoyne scored her first goal of the season at 53:47.

Princeton followed up with another by Benvenuti off a penalty corner at 66:33. The Stags continued to compete as Heinen netted her fourth goal of the season off a penalty stroke about a minute later to pull the Stags within 4-3. Fairfield kept fighting until the very end, making an offensive attempt with just two seconds left on the clock, almost forcing the game into overtime.

Bennett tallied 12 saves while Princeton's Anya Gersoff made one save.

The Stags will continue on the road stopping at Saint Joseph's tomorrow to face off against the Hawks at 1:30pm, followed by a stop at UConn on September 13.
