FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University volleyball team could not stop an undefeated University of Missouri squad tonight at Alumni Hall as the Tigers came away with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-17) victory to spoil the Stags' home opener.
Sophomore Hadley Orr and junior Marilyn Peizer tallied eight kills apiece for the Stags while junior Caitlin Stapleton had six kills and two blocks. Red-shirt senior Carsen Mata had 13 digs while rookie Bella Guanciale added seven digs.
The Stags got the first point of the match on a kill by Stapleton. The Tigers (5-0) then rattled off four points but Fairfield came back to tie it, 5-5, on a kill by Orr. With the score knotted at 7-7, Mizzou used a 6-1 run to pull away from the Stags and went on to the 25-16 win. It was close in the early going of the second set, but the Tigers put together an impressive 11-2 run to come away with the 25-11 victory.
There were six ties and three lead changes in the third set. With the score tied 8-8, the Tigers posted back-to-back points for the lead. Peizer pulled the Stags within 10-9 on a kill but Mizzou answered with a 3-0 run. Fairfield later cut it to 14-12 after a Mizzou error but the Tigers used a 7-1 run to swing the momentum in their favor.
Lisa Henning, a Preseason All-SEC selection, and Carly Kan each registered 10 kills and eight digs for Mizzou. The Tigers hit .341 on the night with 42 kills with senior Molly Kreklow assisting on 37. Mizzou held a slight 6-5 advantage in blocks.
Fairfield (0-4) returns to action this weekend when they travel to the Boston College Invitational, September 7-8, to take on Hampton University, Boston College, and Bryant University.
