BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Fairfield University volleyball team wrapped up action at the Blackbird Invitational with a 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 25-18, 25-15) loss to host LIU Brooklyn tonight at the Steinberg Center.
Freshman
Megan O'Sullivan playing in just her second match as a Stag, posted a team-high 11 kills on .588 hitting and two total blocks. Senior
Rachel Romansky delivered her sixth double-double of the year with 28 assists and a season-high 17 digs to go along with four kills and two aces.
Junior
Caitlin Stapleton had nine kills and four total blocks while sophomore
Hadley Orr had six kills and five digs.
Defensively,
Carsen Mata recorded 10 digs while freshman
Bella Guanciale had 12 digs. Rookie
Grace Simmons made her collegiate debut, checking into the fourth set and picking up a dig.
LIU Brooklyn (5-4) led for nearly all of the opening stanza. After Annika Foit's kill made it 5-4, the Blackbirds would not trail the rest of the set, going on to a 25-20 win.
Fairfield countered with an impressive second set in which the Stags hit a collective .346. With the score tied 8-8, an ace by Romansky sparked an 11-2 Fairfield run. The Stags never looked back as they cruised to the 25-15 win.
In the third set, the score was resting at 15-15 when the Blackbirds put together an 8-1 run. That was all the room LIU Brooklyn needed as it went on to a 25-18 win. In the fourth frame, the score was tied at 6-6 when a 7-0 run by the Blackbirds tilted the set in their favor. LIU Brooklyn went on to the 25-15 win.
Fairfield (2-8) is off until September 21 when it opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play at Quinnipiac University.
