SALT LAKE CITY - Two Stags posted double-doubles and a third led all players in kills but the Fairfield University volleyball team could not overtake the University of Utah falling 3-1 (25-15, 25-15, 21-25, 25-17) this afternoon at the Utah Classic.
Junior
Marilyn Peizer recorded a match-high 14 kills on .344 hitting for the Stags. She also posted two total blocks.
Senior
Rachel Romansky notched her second double-double in as many matches finishing with 39 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore transfer
Hadley Orr notched her first collegiate double-double finishing with 10 kills and 14 digs, both of which were career bests.
Senior
Hayley Moyer chipped in with nine kills, including the 500th of her career, while sophomore
Maddie FitzPatrick added five kills and three total blacks.
Red-shirt senior
Carsen Mata registered a match-high 19 digs, including the 600th of her career, while rookie
Bella Guanciale posted 14 digs.
After dropping the first set, 25-15, the Stags got off to a solid start in the second stanza, opening up a 10-6 lead. The Utes crept back, narrowing the gap to 11-10. After a kill by Peizer, Utah's Chelsey Schofield put down three consecutive kills to flip the score to 13-12 in the Utes' favor. Utah went on to the 25-15 win.
In the third set, Utah surged out to an 8-1 advantage but Fairfield did not back down. After Moyer pulled the Stags within 12-10, Orr came through with back-to-back kills to tie it up. Guanciale followed with a service ace to give the Stags the 13-12 lead while Moyer capped off the 5-0 run with a kill. The Utes tied it 19-19 but the Stags countered with an impressive 6-2 run to close out the set.
The two teams continued the battle in the fourth set. With the score tied, 5-5, Utah tipped the momentum with a 4-0 run. The Utes hit .359 with 17 kills and just three errors in the 25-17 win.
Erin Brandon-Redd, an All-Pac-12 honorable mention last season, paced Utah with 12 kills and six total blocks. Morgan Odale had 12 digs, nine kills, and six total blocks while Schofield added 14 digs and eight kills.
Fairfield closes out its stay at the Utah Classic this evening against Utah State at 5pm (MT).
