The Fairfield University women's soccer team dropped its season opener 1-0 to host Army Friday night in West Point, N.Y. The Stags fall to 0-1 while the Black Knights are now 1-0.

The decisive whistle came in the 66th minute when a Stag defender committed a foul during a scramble inside the 18. Anne Lail connected on the ensuing PK for the only tally of the game.

Fairfield was outshot for the game 20-16, but held a 12-11 edge in shots in the second-half. Four of the Stags game-high six corner kicks also came in the second period, but Jordan Cassalia made three saves, all after the intermission, to preserve the shutout for Army.

Kathleen Early (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) minded the net for the Stags and made six saves, three in each half.

The Stags continue their four-game season opening road trip on Sunday at Wagner. That game is set for 1 p.m. in Staten Island, N.Y.
