FAIRFIELD, Conn.  –
The Fairfield University men's lacrosse team had its second-half comeback thwarted this afternoon as Bellarmine University eked out an 8-7 victory in ECAC Lacrosse action at Alumni Field. Tristan Sperry had a hat trick for the Stags while Drew Federico chipped in with a pair of goals and three ground balls.

Bellarmine (7-2; 3-2 ECAC) opened the day with a pair of unanswered goals five minutes into the game. Jordan Greenfield put the Stags on the board at 5:20 with a man-up tally off a pass from Sam Snow. But the Knights scored twice in the final 27 seconds of the frame to take a 4-1 lead. The Stags and the Knights each scored twice in the second half but it would be Bellarmine with the 6-3 advantage at the break.

The Knights took a 7-3 lead at the 11-minute mark of the third period on a goal by Lance Robinson. That's when Sperry answered with back-to-back unassisted strikes to pull the Stags within 7-5 with 6:21 to play in the stanza.

After a goal by Brogan Hill at 10:16 of the fourth quarter, Federico scored just over a minute later to make it a two-goal game. Sperry netted his third goal of the game with 6:17 left to play to pull the Stags within 8-7. The Knights, however, were able to stave off the Stags attack for the victory.

In addition to his goal, Greenfield posted four groundballs and a caused turnover. Snow had three groundballs to go with his assist.

Jack Murphy made 12 saves in the net for the Stags while Dillon Ward had 17 saves.

Fairfield (6-4; 2-1 ECAC) returns to action on April 6 when it travels to Baltimore, Md. to face Loyola University.
