FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Red Sea roared. The Fairfield University Gymnasium, soon to be called Alumni Hall, was newly renovated. And the success of the 1960s was carrying over to the early 1970s for the Stags men's basketball program. It was a glorious time to be a Fairfield follower.
The 1972-73 and 1973-74 men's basketball teams anchored those successful years by earning the first-ever bids to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The 1972-73 team garnered the attention of the nation with its first-round win over Marshall University, and the 1973-74 team solidified the Stags place on the national scene by earning another bid the following year.
And this Saturday, fans will be able to relive those moments when members of the 1972-73 and 1973-74 teams will return for a halftime celebration as the current Stags host the University at Albany at Webster Bank Arena. In between halves, many members of those teams will be honored for their participation in the NIT. Fans can be part of the celebration by attending the 1 pm game.
And tying the present to the past, the Fairfield basketball community will honor this year's senior class prior to the game as part of the program's annual senior day tradition.
Derek Needham,
Colin Nickerson, and
Desmond Wade comprise the Class of 2013 which has carried on the tradition of post-season success by earning the program's most recent bid to the NIT.
