Women's Basketball Wins Third Straight, Topping St

FAIRFIELD, Conn.  –
Three Stags scored in double figures as the Fairfield University women's basketball team defeated Saint Peter's University, 61-49, to win their third straight game. Juniors Brittany Obi-Tabot and Alexys Vazquez netted 16 points apiece while classmate Katie Cizynski posted a double-double.
 
Cizynski finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds for her third double-double in the last four games. Cizynski has scored in double figures in 15 of her last 16 contests. Obi-Tabot went 7-for-11 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free throw line while grabbing four boards. Vazquez hit four three-pointers and went a 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
 
Fairfield (16-9; 10-4) led from the onset, scoring 17 seconds into the game. The Stags led by as much as 11 points after an Obi-Tabot jumper made it 21-10 at 10:04. Fairfield would maintain at least an eight-point lead the rest of the half and would take a 31-22 advantage into the break.
 
Saint Peter's (2-23; 2-12 MAAC) began the second half with a 7-2 run. The Peacocks would later cut the gap to 39-38 after Kaydine Bent successfully executed a three-point play at 10:52. Fairfield answered with a 9-0 run which was capped off by a pair of Obi-Tabot free throws at 5:29. Saint Peter's cut into the lead late pulling within six points, 54-48, on a pair of Jesika Holmes free throws at 1:01. The Stags, however, would go 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 59 seconds to preserve the win.
 
Sophomore Felicia DaCruz had six assists for the Stags. Junior Christelle Akon-Akech added seven points and seven rebounds while rookie Kristin Schatzlein chipped in with five points.
 
For Saint Peter's, Bent finished with seven points and 11 rebounds while Holmes had 18 points. Aziza May added 14 points.
 
Fairfield plays three of its final four games of the MAAC regular season on the road. The Stags head to Buffalo, N.Y. next weekend to face Niagara University on February 22 and Canisius College on February 24. Fairfield stops at Loyola University Maryland on March 1 before returning home to close out the regular season on March 3 against Marist College.
