JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Three Stags scored in double figures as the Fairfield University women's basketball team defeated Saint Peter's University, 58-50, this evening in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at the Yanitelli Center.
Junior
Brittany Obi-Tabot notched her second double-double of the year with 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Seven of her 13 points came from the free throw line. Junior
Katie Cizynski extended her double-digit scoring streak to 11 games, finishing with 13 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Junior
Alexys Vazquez had 13 points, with three three-pointers and a 4-for-4 effort from the free throw line.
Fairfield (13-7; 7-2 MAAC) used a 7-0 over a 1:43 span to open up a 17-11 lead on Saint Peter's early in the first half. The Stags extended their lead to 27-14 on a three-pointer by
Kristin Schatzlein to cap off a 10-0 run that lasted nearly seven minutes. Saint Peter's Aziza May, who had 12 points in the half, ended a 9:10 scoring drought with a lay-up at 2:20 to make the score 27-16. The Stags added two more points on free throws but Antonia Smith drained a three-pointer at the buzzer for Saint Peter's to pull the Peacocks within 29-19 at the break.
After Saint Peter's (1-19; 1-8 MAAC) scored a quick basket to start the half, the Stags went on a 7-1 run over the next 1:44 to push the lead to 36-22. The Peacocks responded with a run of their own, cutting the deficit to single digits, 38-30, on a pair of free throws by Kristal Edwards at 12:10. Cizynski ended a seven-minute scoreless span for the Stags with a lay-up at 9:01 to make the score 40-32.
Saint Peter's countered once more, as May scored four straight points to make the score 40-36 with 7:33 left to play. Senior
Katelyn Linney silenced the Peacocks with a three-pointer at 4:46. After a Saint Peter's technical foul, Vazquez hit a pair of free throws to make it a 45-36 Fairfield advantage. The Stags fended off the Peacocks for the 58-50 win.
Sophomore
Felicia DaCruz had seven assists and five points while Linney finished with seven points. Senior
Brittany MacFarlane grabbed six rebounds.
May finished with a game-high 23 points for Saint Peter's.
Fairfield returns home on Sunday, February 3 to host Iona College at 2pm in Alumni Hall.
