Volleyball Clinches Share of MAAC Regular Season T

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Fairfield University volleyball team clinched a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Regular Season Championship with a 3-1 (14-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-23) victory at Canisius College this afternoon. The Stags will look to defend their 2012 MAAC Championship as the top-seed in next weekend's MAAC Tournament in Loudonville, N.Y. It is the 18th consecutive berth in the MAAC Tournament and the 13th MAAC Regular Season Championship for the Stags who finish the regular season 14-4 in league play and 17-12 overall.

Head Coach Alija Pittenger posted her 111th victory at the helm of the Stags, tying her with former coach Jeff Werneke for the most victories in a program history.

Senior Hayley Moyer had 11 kills and just one error in 21 attempts for an attack percentage of .476. She also posted six total blocks. Junior Caitlin Stapleton had a team-high 12 kills along with four blocks while Rachel Romansky posted a double-double with 40 assists and 13 digs.

Libero Carsen Mata finished with 17 digs. Sophomore Maddie FitzPatrick finished with seven kills on .462 hitting and tour total blocks.

Canisius (11-18; 9-9 MAAC) dominated the first set as the Griffs ran away with the 25-14 win. The Stags regrouped in the second set, topping the Griffs, 25-17.

In the third set, Canisius had cut into the Fairfield lead, 19-17, but a huge kill by Stapleton changed momentum. The Stags closed out the set on a 6-2 run en route to the 25-19 win. With the score knotted 19-19 in the fourth set, the Stags rattled off three unanswered points to gain some breathing room. The Griffs would cut it to 22-21 and then cut it to 24-23 but Fairfield held on for the win.

The 2013 MAAC Championship will be held November 23-24 in Loudonville, N.Y. Top-seeded Fairfield will face fourth-seeded Manhattan at 1pm on Saturday in the first semifinal. In the second semifinal, #2 Marist will face #3 Iona. For complete event information, visit MAACSports.com.
