FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University field hockey team fell to Maine, 5-1, this afternoon at University Field. Junior
Felicitas Heinen scored the goal for the Stags.
Maine got off to an early start, scoring two goals in the first five minutes of the game. The first goal was scored from a straight on shot by Cassidy Svetek at 1:54. The Stags answered with a shot from
Julie de Paeuw which was saved by the Black Bears' goalkeeper Natasha Ford. Maine's second goal was scored by Danielle Aviani off a pass from Holly Stewart at 4:08.
About nine minutes later, the Black Bears took a 3-0 lead when Aviani scored her second goal of the game off a pass from Marissa Shaw. At 27:44, Maine's Abbey Gutowski scored from about three yards out in the left circle. The Stags continued to battle, taking two more shots off penalty corners, but were unable to score. The game was 4-0 heading into halftime.
Almost two minutes into the second half, the Black Bears took a 5-0 lead. The goal was scored by Holly Stewart from the top of the circle. Heinen put the Stags on the board when she netted a goal off a penalty corner at 51:23. The goal was assisted by
Shealyn Testa and
Valerie Buurma. Fairfield fought back for the rest of the second half, taking eight shots off of eight penalty corners, but came up short. The final score of the game was 5-1.
Goalkeeper
Caitlin Bennett tallied three saves while Maine's Ford totaled six. The Stags out-shot the Black Bears, 15-10, and had a 15-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Fairfield will return to University Field tomorrow afternoon for another America East contest. The Stags will host UMass Lowell at 1pm. After tomorrow's contest, Fairfield will take America East play on the road, stopping at No. 12 Albany on October 26 and New Hampshire on November 1.
