POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Fairfield University volleyball team extended their winning streak to six matches by downing Marist College, 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 25-18, 25-18), in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action. With the win, the Stags improve to 7-3 in league play and to 9-11 overall.
Senior
Rachel Romansky tallied her fifth-straight double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs to go along with three aces and four kills. Sophomore
Hadley Orr tallied her third double-double in four matches by notching 11 kills and 11 digs. Junior
Marilyn Peizer registered double-digit kills for the fifth-straight match, finishing with a team-best 13 kills.
Fairfield out-blocked Marist, 10-7, and held the Red Foxes (12-7; 6-3 MAAC) to an attack percentage of .084 on the day. Mackenzie Stephens and Kelsey Lahey each recorded 14 kills for Marist.
The Stags opened up a 19-10 lead in the opening frame but the Red Foxes stormed by tying the set, 19-19. Marist took its first lead of the day, 21-20, on a kill by Audra Brady and made it a two-point advantage on a kill by Courtney Shaw. After a Marist attack error, Romansky tied things up with a kill. Shaw returned the lead to the Red Foxes, 23-22, but Peizer delivered a kill to retie the game. Romansky followed with an ace while Weaver and Peizer gave Fairfield the 25-23 win with a block.
After Marist took the second set, 25-17, Fairfield responded with a solid effort in the third set. With the score knotted at 16-16, senior
Hayley Moyer came through with a big kill to ignite a 9-2 run for the Stags as they went on to the 25-18 win.
In the fourth set, Fairfield asserted itself once again, opening up a 16-9 lead after back-to-back kills by Peizer. Marist would cut the deficit to five points, 25-18, but kills by Romansky and Peizer gave the Stags the win.
The victory was the 499th program win for the Stags. Since becoming a varsity program in 1985, the team has an overall record of 499-409.
Fairfield will go for program win 500 tomorrow, October 20, at Siena College.
