Box Score

The Fairfield University women's soccer team earned its third consecutive win with a 2-0 defeat of visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Iona College Wednesday night on Lessing Field. The victory improves the Stags to 9-5-1 overall and 5-1-1 in MAAC play, while the Gaels fall to 4-7-4 on the year and 3-2-2 in league action.

The Stags wasted little time in getting ahead when Ashley Small (Melville, N.Y.) tallied her team-leading 10th goal of the season just 6:56 into the game. Small dribbled around an Iona defender in the box and fired home to the right side from five yards out. The tally proved to be the game-winner, the junior's sixth of the season.

The Stags defense was stellar once again, allowing just four total shots by Iona, one in the first-half, and just two were on goal. Kathleen Early (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) posted her second clean sheet in three games with a two-save effort in net for Fairfield. Trista Rivera (Wading River, N.Y.) minded the net for Iona, allowing both goals and stopping eight shots.

The Stags took slightly longer to find the net in the second-half of play as Molly Moran (Monson, Mass.) netted her second tally of the year. The freshman collected a loose ball at the top of the box following a scramble and snuck the ball into the back of the net.

The Stags are back in action on Saturday for their final home game of the 2013 season when they host Niagara at 1 p.m. on Lessing Field. The senior class will be honored prior to the contest.
