Women's Basketball Defeats Siena 50-43

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's basketball team completed the season sweep of Siena College by topping the Saints, 50-43, this evening at Alumni Hall. Juniors Katie Cizynski and Brittany Obi-Tabot both scored in double figures for the Stags (12-6; 6-1 MAAC) who won their fifth straight.
 
Obi-Tabot scored in double figures for the sixth-straight game, finishing with a game-high 17 points. Obi-Tabot went 5-for-6 from the floor and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe. She also grabbed six rebounds and had three blocks.
 
Cizynski extended her double-digit scoring streak to nine games, finishing with 10 points. She also grabbed six rebounds.

It took awhile for both teams to find their rhythm as both teams struggled to find the basket with the Saints shooting just 31.8 percent and the Stags shooting 38.5 percent in the opening stanza.
 
Siena (7-11; 3-4 MAAC) scored the game's first field goal at 17:56 on a three by Clara Sole Anglada and took a 4-0 lead 40 seconds later on a pair of free throws. The Stags finally connected at 16:37 with basket from Cizynski. Siena, which did not trail in the half, took a 21-20 lead into the break.

Fairfield took its first lead of the night, 24-23, just 2:30 into the second half on a basket by Christelle Akon-Akech. Obi-Tabot was able to post seven straight points to extend Fairfield's lead to 31-25. Siena cut the gap to 31-28 but a three-pointer by Kristin Schatzlein returned the lead to six points with 7:09 left to play. 

Obi-Tabot made it 10-point game, 39-29, at 6:10. The Saints chipped away at the lead, pulling within 41-39 with two minutes to play. But, the Stags fended off Siena in the closing seconds for the 50-43 win.
 
Akon-Akech had six points and three assists while junior Alexys Vazquez had seven rebounds and two points.
 
Fairfield returns to action on Sunday, January 27 when it hosts Rider University at 2pm in Alumni Hall.
