Volleyball Powers Past Pioneers 3-0 To Win Sacred

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University volleyball team won their fifth-straight match and was crowned the Sacred Heart Hampton Inn Shelton Invitational champions by blanking the host Pioneers 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-13) this afternoon at the Pitt Center. Senior Brianna Dixion was named tournament MVP while teammates Hayley Moyer and Caitlin Stapleton joined Dixion on the All-Tournament Team.
 
Dixion finished the match with 11 kills on .474 hitting and three total blocks. In the Stags' three tournament victories, Dixion recorded 38 kills (3.17/s), 10 digs, and seven total blocks.
 
Moyer recorded eight kills and five total blocks against Sacred Heart. She had 15 total blocks (1.25/s) and 28 kills (2.33) on .364 hitting in three matches at the Invitational. Stapleton had 12 kills on .556 hitting with two total blocks against the Pioneers. She appeared in two matches, posting 15 kills (2.50/s) and six total blocks (1.00/s).
 
Defensively, Kara Reis had 11 digs while Carsen Mata added eight digs on the day. Sophomore Camille Coffey chipped in with six digs and four kills.
 
The Stags relinquished an early five-point lead in the opening frame, allowing the Pioneers to come back and tie the score 20-20. After trading the next series of points, Moyer put Fairfield on top with a kill while freshman Nicole Marzik gave the Stags the 26-24 victory with a kill of her own.
 
Sacred Heart (2-7) pulled ahead 18-10 in the second set. Fairfield did not back down, surging forward with an 11-1 run to overtake the Pioneers, 21-19, on a block. The Stags cruised to the 25-21 victory. The Stags powered past the Pioneers in the third set opening up a 21-7 advantage. Fairfield never looked back in the 25-13 win.
 
Fairfield (5-5) opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action next weekend by hosting St. Peter's on September 15 and Manhattan on September 16. Both matches are slated for 2pm in Alumni Hall.
