BALTIMORE, Md. – The Fairfield University volleyball team posted their third consecutive shutout victory with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-22) win at Loyola University Maryland to close out a five-match road swing. The Stags improve to 10-7 on the season and 5-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action.
Sophomore
Camille Coffey notched her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore
Marilyn Peizer converted 10 of her 19 errorless swings for kills, finishing with a career-best .526 attack percentage. Sophomore
Caitlin Stapleton added nine kills on .467 hitting while classmate
Lindsay Weaver tallied seven kills.
Defensively, senior libero
Kara Reis inished with 14 digs on the afternoon, bringing her career total to 1,652 digs. Reis is just 22 digs away from Lindsey Lee's program record of 1,674 which was set in 2007. Senior
Stephanie Cruz added a season-high 14 digs.
Loyola (9-7; 2-3 MAAC) could not stop a hot-hitting Fairfield in the opening frame. The Stags did not commit an attack error in the first set, putting down 13 of 21 attempts for kills. After the Greyhounds pulled within 16-15, a kill by
Rachel Romansky ignited a 9-2 run for the Stags as they came away with the 25-17 win.
The Stags were trailing, 12-10, in the second set when Coffey delivered back-to-back kills to tie the stanza. Junior
Hayley Moyer put Fairfield ahead to stay with a kill of her own on the next serve. Moyer later closed out an impressive 12-1 run by the Stags with another kill which made the score 22-13. The Stags went on to the 25-15 win.
The third stanza was closer with 11 ties and three lead changes. With the score tied at 15-15, the Stags served four consecutive points to take a comfortable lead. Loyola was able to hold off match point twice to pull within 24-22, but Weaver ended the match with a kill.
The Stags have taken 17 consecutive matches from the Greyhounds dating back to 2003. Fairfield hit a collective .324 for the match while holding Loyola to a .185 attack percentage. The Stags out-blocked the Greyhounds, 6-1.
Fairfield returns home to Alumni Hall next weekend. The Stags host Siena College on October 6 at 2pm followed by a visit from Marist College on October 7 at 2pm.
