NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.  – The Fairfield University volleyball team fell to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Iona College 3-0 (22-25, 15-25, 21-25) this evening at the Hynes Center.
 
Sophomore Caitlin Stapleton registered double-digit kills for the fifth consecutive match, finishing with 10 kills against the Gaels. Junior Hayley Moyer and sophomore Camille Coffey added seven kills apiece. Coffey also had a team-high 10 digs.
 
The first set featured 11 ties and six lead changes. With the score tied at 20-20, Iona's Taylor Cembalisty sparked a 4-0 run with a kill. The Stags were able to hold off set point twice on kills by Stapleton but Cembalisty ended it with a kill of her own. Iona (5-9) carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. The Gaels never looked back in the 25-15 win.
 
The Stags started the third stanza by opening up 7-4 advantage. The Gaels responded with a 9-0 run to overtake Fairfield, 13-7. The Stags cut the gap to three points, 23-20, late in the match, but Iona held on for the 25-21 win.
 
Junior Rachel Romansky had 31 assists and eight digs along with two total blocks.
 
With the win, the Gaels improve to 3-0 in the MAAC while the Stags even their record to 2-2 in league play.
 
Fairfield (7-7) returns to action on September 26 at Marist College followed by stops at Rider University on September 29 and Loyola University Maryland on September 30.
