FAIRFIELD, Conn.– The Fairfield University volleyball team opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action with a decisive 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-18) victory over Saint Peter's University this afternoon at Alumni Hall. The Stags have now won six consecutive matches, four of which have been 3-0 decisions.
Senior
Brianna Dixion tallied a match-high 14 kills on .480 hitting while sophomore
Caitlin Stapleton notched 12 kills and four total blocks. Junior
Rachel Romansky recorded her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 37 assists and 12 digs. The setter also added three kills and an ace.
Senior
Kara Reisrecorded 21 digs while
Nicole Marzik had 10 digs. Senior
Stephanie Cruz and sophomore
Carsen Mata each had seven digs.
Sophomore
Lindsay Weaver was strong at the net finishing with a season-high four total blocks to go along with kills. Junior
Hayley Moyer added three total blocks and delivered five kills on .455 hitting.
Fairfield (6-5; 1-0 MAAC) and Saint Peter's (1-12; 0-1 MAAC) were tied 9-9 when Stapleton broke the stalemate with a kill. Mata then stepped to the line and served seven consecutive points. The Stags never looked back as they took the set 25-18.
In the second set, it was Romansky who gave the Stags a big lead at the service line as she served eight consecutive points to start the frame. The Stags cruised to the 25-12 victory. Saint Peter's kept it close in the third set but with the scored tied at 14-14, a blast by Moyer ignited a 6-1 run for Fairfield. The Stags went on to the 25-18 win.
Fairfield out-blocked Saint Peter's, 7-4, and held a 45-21 advantage in kills and a 63-44 advantage in digs.
The Stags are back in action tomorrow, September 16, when they host Manhattan College at 2pm in Alumni Hall.
