STORRS, Conn. – The Fairfield University volleyball team fell to undefeated Michigan State University, 3-0 (15-25; 13-25; 22-25), this evening in the opening match of the 2012 UConn Classic at Gampel Pavilion.

Senior Brianna Dixion recorded a team-high nine kills for Fairfield bringing her career total to 978. Dixion is poised to become the 11th Stag in program history to record 1,000 career kills.

Sophomore Camille Coffey added eight kills and six digs while freshman Nicole Marzik had six kills. Senior Kara Reis notched 18 digs.

The Spartans, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, improved to 4-0 on the year. Michigan State out-blocked the Stags, 8-1, to stymie their attack.

Michigan State jumped out to a 6-1 lead to start the match, but Fairfield surged back and tied the score, 6-6, on a solo block by Coffey. The Spartans took the lead on the next serve and were able to pull away from the Stags for the 25-15 win.

After trailing early in the second frame, the Stags pulled within a point, 12-11, on a kill by Dixion. That's as close as Fairfield would get as MSU went on a 13-2 run to close out the set. In the third stanza, the Stags rallied late in the set, pulling within 24-22 but the Spartans held on for the win.

Fairfield (0-4) continues action at the UConn Classic tomorrow, September 1. The Stags face the host Huskies at 12:30pm followed by Dartmouth at 5pm.
