The Fairfield University men's lacrosse team had its program-best seven game win streak snapped by #17 Colgate University 12-6 this afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y. The loss drops the #13 Stags to 7-1 on the year, while the Raiders improve to 7-1.
Colgate opened the game with a three-goal spurt, netting the first 1:58 into the game and following at 11:20 and 8:14. John Snellman got the Stags on the board at the 6:06 mark, putting home a pass from Sam Snow. The Raiders would push the lead to four with goals at 5:29 and 3:23, ending the half with a 5-1 edge. Fairfield cut that deficit to three at the break, 6-3, as Brent Adams (12:36) and Snow (3:14) sandwiched goals around Peter Baum's second (4:03) of the game.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net for a majority of the third-quarter. Baum completed the hat trick with the first tally of the period with 2:05 to play. Ryan Walsh followed 1:33 later to give Colgate and 8-3 lead heading into the final stanza. Snow struck 2:09 into the period to get Fairfield back within four, 8-4. Brendan McCann and James Queeney scored 18 seconds apart, 8:59 and 8:41, to give Colgate its largest lead of the game 10-4. The Stags answered with quick goals of their won, Snow at the 7:53 mark and Colin McLinden at 7:09, to make it 10-6, but it would be as close as they would get. Colgate netted a pair of goals in the final 3:46 for the final margin.
Snow finished with three goals and an assist to lead the Stags offense, while McLinden added an assist to go along with his goal. Charlie Cipriano made 11 saves and was charged with 11 goals against.
Baum led all scorers with six points, netting four goals. Jared Madison made 11 saves to earn the win for Colgate.
The Stags finish non-conference play a program-best 7-1 as they prepare for the ECAC Lacrosse opener on March 24. Fairfield will host Hobart at noon at Alumni Field.
