WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Fairfield University softball team extended its winning streak to three games with a sweep of Gardner-Webb University this afternoon, games that were part of the Seahawk Classic hosted by UNC-Wilmington.
The Stags opened the day with a 7-4 win despite falling behind by a pair of runs in the first inning. Fairfield rallied for three runs in the second inning and two more runs in the third frame to take control of the game, 5-1. In the second inning,
Kimi Kurata reached first base on a fielder's choice, and took second when
Tiffany Lawson singled to left field.
Brianna Levick followed with a three-run home run to give Fairfield the lead at 3-2.
The team added two more runs in the following inning, a rally that started with a lead-off single by
Mikayla Shumate. After a pitching change,
Lauren Liseth drove home a pair of runs with a homer that elevated the score to 5-2. Gardner-Webb pulled within two runs when it scored in the bottom of the third. The Stags pulled away with two more runs in the fifth inning as
Rachel Beaudoin scored off
Sammy Ruffolo singled to left field. Levick closed out the Stags scoring with a grounder to the left side that made it a 7-3 lead.
The same two teams met in a semi-final game a few hours later with Fairfield posting another win. This win came in more dramatic fashion as Fairfield fell behind 2-0 before rallying for two runs in the fourth inning.
Kristen Filicia scored the first run when Liseth sent a fly ball to left field to make it s 2-1 game. The game was tied later in the inning after Allie Wigand stroked a base hit.
Gardner-Webb regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning and kept that lead into the seventh inning. In their final at-bat, Fairfield tied the game when Filicia singled which chased home Kurata for a 3-3 game. Liseth ended the game with a single up the middle, allowing Levick to come home with the deciding run.
Rae Ball went the distance in the second game to earn the win, striking out six and scattering seven hits with three walks. In the first game,
Rebecca Trott earned the win by tossing four innings of relief, taking over for starter
Emily Orr. Ball finished the opener by tossing the final inning.
Fairfield will close out the Seahawk Classic on Sunday in the final round of the tournament.
