INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Fairfield University women's basketball team improves to 2-1 on the season after defeating Butler University this afternoon, 54-45.
The Stags were led by
Katelyn Linney with 17 points and juniors
Alexys Vazquez and
Brittany Obi-Tabot who both posted 11 points on the day. Junior
Katie Cizynski led the team defensively with 10 rebounds while
Brittany MacFarlane tallied seven. For Butler University, Daress McClung racked up 19 points followed by Taylor Schippers who totaled 16.
The Bulldogs jumped out in front with a 5-0 lead before Vazquez put the Stags on the board with a three pointer. Fairfield's first lead, 10-8, came in the 13th minute on a jumper by Linney. The senior guard led the Stags with eight points in the first half while junior McClung led Butler with 11 total points. The Bulldogs regained the lead with the final shot of the half.
Butler owned a 21-19 lead entering the second half but Fairfield captured the final lead of the game at the 10:35 mark on Cizynski's first points of the game. The Stags followed up with an 18-4 run, giving them the 44-37 lead with six minutes to play. Head Coach
Joe Frager led Fairfield to the 54-45 win and is eight victories away from the 300th of his career.
Fairfield returns home on November 20 to host St. Bonaventure University at 7pm in Alumni Hall. After breaking for Thanksgiving, the Stags host the University of Vermont on November 27 and St. Francis (NY) on December 1.
