FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's basketball team was victorious in their home opener this evening, downing Brown University, 49-34, at Alumni Hall. Junior
Katie Cizynski paced the Stags with her first double-double of the season.
Cizynski posted 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds, seven on the offensive glass. She also dished out a career-best four assists in 32 minutes of action. Senior
Katelyn Linney was also in double-digits for the second time in as many games, netting 13 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field. Linney also grabbed six rebounds and came away with three steals.
Fairfield (1-1) would never trail after registering the first five points of the game. Brown (1-1) broke its scoreless drought at 16:42 on a three-pointer by Shelia Dixon. The Stags heated up, going on an 11-2 run to pull away from the Bears. The run was capped off by consecutive lay-ins by Linney which gave Fairfield the 22-8 advantage at 10:53.
Fairfield continued its stifling defense, holding Brown scoreless for the next five minutes until Dixon connected at 5:05. The Stags continued to roll offensively as senior
Brittany MacFarlane stuffed in a lay-in with 24 ticks left on the clock to send Fairfield into the break with a 33-19 lead.
In the second half, the Stags took a 47-25 lead, their largest of the night, on a lay-up by Linney at the 6:14 mark.
MacFarlane finished with seven points and six rebounds while sophomore
Felicia DaCruz had six points, which tied a career-best, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Junior
Brittany Obi-Tabot recorded a career-high nine rebounds.
For Brown, Dixon finished with a game-high 15 points.
Fairfield travels to Butler University on November 17 before returning home to Alumni Hall on November 20 to host St. Bonaventure University.
