Volleyball Blanks Saint Peter's 3-0

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Fairfield University volleyball team topped Saint Peter's University 3-0 (25-7, 26-14, 25-20) this afternoon to close out the regular season series with the Peacocks. Sophomore Caitlin Stapleton led the way with a match-high 15 kills to help the Stags improve to 14-8 overall and 9-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
 
Senior Brianna Dixion recorded 12 kills and four digs while junior Rachel Romansky posted her 12th double-double of the year with 45 assists and 14 digs.
 
Senior Kara Reis had 21 digs on the day while sophomore Camille Coffey added 10 digs and eight kills. Junior Hayley Moyer had six kills on .500 hitting.
 
Fairfield dominated in the first set, hitting .500 with 18 kills while holding Saint Peter's to a minus-.065 attack percentage. The Stags jumped out to an 8-2 lead and never looked back. Fairfield held the Peacocks to seven points in the frame, marking the second time this season in which the Stags have held an opponent to less than 10 points in a non-deciding set.
 
The second set was a closer with nine ties and eight lead changes. Saint Peter's climbed back from a four-point deficit to tie the score, 20-20, on a kill by Brittany Smith and then took the lead after a Fairfield attack error. With the score knotted at 24-24, a Saint Peter's service error put the Stags back on top and then Stapleton closed it out with a kill.
 
The Peacocks opened the third set by taking a 5-1 lead. Fairfield narrowed the gap and was trailing, 9-7, when they turned the tables by going on a 7-0 run. Saint Peter's briefly stopped the run with a kill, but the Stags added three more points for the 17-10 lead. Fairfield went on to the 25-20 victory.
 
For the match, Fairfield posted 52 kills on .248 hitting while holding Saint Peter's to 24 kills on .079 hitting. The Peacocks (1-25; 0-12 MAAC) out-blocked the Stags, 4-2.
 
Fairfield returns to action tomorrow, October 21, when it travels to Manhattan College to close out the season series against the Jaspers. Fairfield then returns home to Alumni Hall for five-straight MAAC matches, beginning with Iona College on October 27.
