Four Stags scored in double figures as the Fairfield University women's basketball team downed Iona College, 78-64, at the Hynes Athletic Center to win their fifth straight game. With the win, the Stags improve to 16-5 overall and 9-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
 
Sophomores Alexys Vazquez and Katie Cizynski each turned in career-best performances. Vazquez netted 17 points, going 6-for-9 from the field while Cizynski scored 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting for her fourth consecutive game scoring in double figures.
 
Senior Taryn Johnson scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out five assists, and tied a career high with five steals. Senior Desiree Pina scored 16 points and handed out seven assists tying a career-best for the second straight game.
 
The 78 points were the highest offensive output of the season by the Stags. The last time Fairfield scored 70 points in a contest was on December 5, 2010 at Hofstra University.
 
Cizynski had eight of the Stags' first 12 points of the game while Vazquez extended the Fairfield lead to 18-13 at 11:47 with back-to-back three-pointers. Cizynski put the Stags on top by seven points, 20-13, with 11:13 left in the half. Iona countered with a 9-3 run over the next four minutes to tie the game at 22-22 on a three-pointer by Diana Hubbard.
 
The Stags responded with a run of their own, out-scoring Iona, 16-2, to pull ahead 38-24 with 10 ticks left on the clock. The Fairfield defense, meanwhile, clamped down on Iona, holding them scoreless nearly the all of the final six minutes of the half until the Gaels' Damika Martinez stuck home a lay-in as the game clock expired. Fairfield took a 38-26 lead into half time.
 
Iona opened the second half on a 10-3 run to pull within 41-36 at 17:47. The Gaels made it a three-point game, 45-42, at the 15-minute mark on a basket by Martinez. The Stags regrouped and went on an 11-0 run, which was capped off by a three-pointer by Vazquez at 11:21 to give Fairfield a 56-42 advantage.
 
Fairfield continued to roll, extending its lead to 69-51 at 4:58 on a long-range three-pointer by Pina which put the game out of reach.

Fairfield shot 55.6 percent from the field, connecting on 30 of its 54 field goal attempts. The Stags also shot 57.1 percent from three-point range, going 8-for-14.

Martinez finished with a game-high 23 points for the Gaels. Iona shot 40.4 percent from the field for the game.
 
Fairfield returns to action on February 2 to host Rider University at 7pm in the Stags final game of the year at Webster Bank Arena. Fairfield hosts Saint Peter's College on February 4 at Alumni Hall before spending five of its final six regular season games on the road.
