Field Hockey Comes Up Short Against Hofstra In Hom

                FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Marit Westenberg scored a goal and added an assist as the Fairfield University field hockey team dropped a  4-2 decision to Hofstra University in the Stags' home opener.
 
                The Pride opened the scoring at the 25:54 mark when Krizia Layne sent a pass from the top of the circle to the side of the goal. Genna Kovar received the pass and pushed the shot past Fairfield goalkeeper Maddy Sposito for a 1-0 lead. Kovar improved the advantage to 2-0 when she took control of a deflected shot off a penalty corner and beat the goalkeeper to the near side.
 
                The Stags cut the lead in half with 19 minutes remaining as Marit Westenberg scored her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Nikki McLucas, who started the scoring chance with a penalty corner. The Pride answered two minutes later when Darrah Rachman secured a loose ball, dribbled into the circle, and flicked a shot that caught the far corner of the goal for a 3-1 lead. Layne finished off the Hofstra scoring with a goal off a penalty corner with five minutes remaining.
 
                Fairfield beat the buzzer as Shealyn Testa scored her first goal of the season off a pass from Westenberg with two seconds remaining in the contest.
 
                Sposito made six saves while Valerie Buurma picked up a defensive save for the Stags. Amanda Heyde tallied four saves for the Pride.
 
                The Stags return to action this weekend when they host Radford University on Friday at 2 pm and St. Francis College on Sunday at 2 pm.
