POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University volleyball team clipped Marist College 3-2 (20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13) this evening in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match. Freshman
Camille Coffey posted a match-high 19 kills while six others Stags were in double figures on the night.
In addition her kills, Coffey finished with nine digs and a career-best four total blocks. Freshman
Caitlin Stapleton added 13 kills and six total blocks, both career bests. Junior
Brianna Dixion and senior
Kendal Dirkin each notched 10 kills. Setter
Rachel Romansky recorded 54 assists, five digs, and three kills.
Sophomore
Hayley Moyer was strong in the middle for the Stags, registering a career-best seven total blocks along with four kills. Junior
Kara Reis had 18 digs while freshman
Carsen Mata posted 11 digs to help the Stags defense.
After dropping the first set, the Stags (5-8; 2-1 MAAC) stormed back in the second, downing the Red Foxes, 25-17. In the third set, Marist (5-8; 2-1 MAAC) came back from a four-point deficit to tie the score, 19-19. A kill by Coffey broke the stalemate and was the first of six unanswered points Fairfield delivered to take the frame, 25-19.
In the fourth set, the Red Foxes led from the start, pulling out to a 15-7 lead. Marist went on to the 25-21 win and evened the match at two sets apiece.
Fairfield trailed by three early in the fifth set when a kill by Moyer sparked a huge 4-0 run and gave the Stags a 13-12 advantage. The Red Foxes tied it on a kill by Grace Hill but back-to-back kills by Stapleton sealed the victory for the Stags.
The Stags out-blocked the Red Foxes, 12-8, and held Marist to a .186 attack percentage.
Fairfield returns to action on Sunday, September 25 at Siena.
