Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team ended the weekend with a 2-0 mark following a 2-1 victory over Saint Francis University on Sunday afternoon.  Senior captains Marit Westenberg and Leah Furey each had a goal in today's game.

Although the Stags outshot Saint Francis six to five in the first half, it was Jocelyn Scillia of the visiting team who scored the first goal of the game at the 27:20 mark after an assist from junior Kellie Mason.  Fairfield was unable to put one across in the remaining minutes of the period, going into half-time trailing by a 1-0 score.

The Stags wasted no time in the second period.  Two minutes in, Furey had a good carry up field to Westenberg but the Red Flash were able to block her shot.  Continuing the pressure, Felicitas Heinen put a pass up in the air to Westenberg for a breakaway, who at the 31:39 mark put the ball into the net.  Possession went back and forth throughout the half, with each team having a number of shots on goal.  The Red Flash had their chance to take control with four minutes remaining, but goalkeeper Maddy Sposito made a game-changing save.  With one minute left on the clock, Fairfield's Heinen took a shot off a penalty corner finding Furey near the net to deflect the ball in, giving the Stags the lead 2-1.  Saint Francis had one last chance with less than one minute of play as freshman Carissa Makea took her shot but once again Sposito made a great save to end the game.

The Stags imjproved their overall record to 4-2 following the win over Saint Francis.  The team will next face the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks in Bethlehem, Pa. on September 17 at 1 pm.
