Marit Westenberg scored a pair of goals to lead the Fairfield University field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Siena College on the road..
The Stags proved to be a threat on both sides of the field today. The defense allowed only five shots throughout the game and the offense compiled a total of 26 shots against the Saints.
Fairfield dominated the field in the first period with a number of Stags taking shots on goal. It was senior
Marit Westenberg (The Hague, Netherlands) at the 32:30 mark who put it past Siena goalkeeper Beth Meyers, unassisted for her second goal of the season. After two more attempts by sophomore
Christy Starsinic (Hummmelstown, Pa.) in the last minute, the period came to an end.
In the second half, the Stags' offense put the pressure on once again with 16 total shots on goal. However, it was Siena's Michaela Sullivan who pushed it past Fairfield's junior goalkeeper
Maddy Sposito (Ridgefield, Conn.) just over halfway through the second period for her first goal of the season.
Minutes later, Westenberg scored her second goal of the game which was assisted by freshman
Sarah Wickles (Hatfield, Mass.) at the 59:07 mark. The goal gave the Stags the a 2-1 lead, a score which would hold for the remainder of the game.
The Stags, now 2-1, will play their first home game of the season on Wednesday, September 7 against Hofstra University at 4 pm.
