The Fairfield University men's lacrosse team dropped an 11-5 decision to #5 University of Denver in the team's final regular season game of the season on Saturday in Denver, Colo. The loss drops the Stags to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in league play, while the Pioneers improve to 11-2 on the year and 6-0 in ECAC action.
The Pioneers jumped out to leads of 2-0 and 4-1 in the first-half, but the Stags offense responded. Jordan Greenfield tallied his second of the game with 8:33 to play in the first-half to start a 4-0 Fairfield run that would span into the second-half.
Marshall Johnson cut the Stags deficit to one, 4-3, with an unassisted goal with 6:57 to play in t he second-quarter, which would be the halftime margin.
John Snellman started the second-half scoring with an unassisted goal 4:18 to the third quarter to tie the score 4-4.

Matt Plominski at the midway point of the quarter to give the Stags the lead 5-4. Denver needed just 2:40 of game action to get the equalizer from Todd Baxter, who would net the go ahead goal just seven seconds later for a 6-5 Pioneer advantage. Denver would tally five more goals, while the Stags went scoreless the remainder of the way, to provide the final margin.
The Stags won just three face-offs on the afternoon, and were 0-5 in the fourth quarter, while picking up only 15 ground balls, to Denver's 33. The Pioneers also outshot Fairfield 49-33 on the afternoon, but did commit three more turnovers, 14-11, than the Stags. Fairfield was 14-17 in clear attempts and 0-2 in man-up chances, while Denver was 9-9 on clears and 2-5 in extra-man situations.
Charlie Cipriano took the loss in net for Fairfield, playing 47 minutes in net, while
Tommy Kralovenec played seven minutes. Cipriano made nine saves, giving up eight goals, while Kralovenec made three stops and allowed three goals. Jamie Faus made 10 saves in 57:34 of action to earn the win for Denver and Troy Orzech stopped the only shot he faced in 2:26 in cage.
Fairfield is the third-seed in inaugural ECAC Lacrosse League Tournament, which will be played at the University of Denver. The Stags take on second-seeded Loyola University Maryland on Thursday at 6 p.m. EDT. The Greyhounds nipped the Stags 7-6 in overtime when the two teams met during the regular season. The Pioneers are the top-seed and will face fourth-seeded Ohio State, who defeated Bellarmine on Saturday to earn the final spot. The semifinal winners will meet on ESPNU on Saturday at 1p.m. EDT with the winner earning the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
