Men's Lacrosse Hosts #8 Hofstra On Senior Day

The Fairfield University men's lacrosse team plays its final home, and non-conference, game of the season as it hosts #8/8 Hofstra University Saturday at 1 p.m. on Lessing Field. The Stags are 6-5 on the year, while the Pride enter the game at 10-1. Fairfield won its last game and two of its last three, while the Pride has won five straight games.

Tickets are available at the entrance on the north end of Lessing Field prior to the game on Saturday. Fans unable to make the game can watch on-line, for $7.95, or follow Livestats for free.

The game marks the final home game of the careers of the Fairfield men's lacrosse Class of 2011. Eleven of the class members will don their white uniforms for the last time today, with one returning next season for a fifth-year. Nick Baglio, Sean Bannon, Steve Golmont, Tommy Kralovenec, Doug Kuring, Matt Lanzaro, Ryan Mulford, Matt Plominski, Chris Trombino, Max Trunz and Clay Wells are making their final appearance on Lessing Field, while Brendan McTague, who will be honored today, is scheduled to return for the 2012 campaign. The Senior Day ceremony will begin at 12:45 p.m.

Saturday's game marks only the second meeting of the men's lacrosse teams from Fairfield and Hofstra. The two squads met in Hempstead, N.Y. in 2002, a game the Pride won 11-8.

Hofstra enters today's game as the top-ranked scoring defense in the nation, allowing just 6.09 goals per game. The Pride are scoring 10.4 goals a contest, a number which is 19th in the nation. Jamie Lincoln and Jay Card are tied for the team lead with 33 points. Lincoln has scored a team-best 25 goals, with four man-up tallies, while Card is tied with Stephen Bentz for the team lead with 11 assists. Andrew Gvozden has started all 11 games in goal for Hofstra and played 608 minutes. His 5.44 GAA is tops in the nation, while he ranks fourth nationally with a .618 save percentage.

Fairfield and Hofstra are two of the top man-up scoring teams in the nation, while the Stags rank equally as high in man-down defensive standings. Fairfield's man-down is stopping opponents 83 percent of the time, fourth in the nation, while the Pride are ranked third in man-up scoring, with a 52.9 percent success rate. Fairfield ranks fourth in man-up scoring, tallying a goal in 51.2 percent of its extra-man chances, with the Hofstra man-down unit ranking 33rd nationally, stopping opponents 70 percent of the time.

Max Trunz had a career-high five points in the Stags win on Tuesday and is second on the roster with 21 total points. For the second consecutive year he is leading the team in assists, with 16, after handing out three against Hartford. Trunz has five assists in the last three games, and at least one in nine of 11 games this spring. Over the last two seasons he has totaled 30 assists, and enters his final home game with 41 career assists. Trunz' effort on Tuesday moved him to third in the ECAC, and the top-30 in the nation, at 1.5 assists per game.

Fairfield, unranked in this week's New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Coaches Poll, is 3-1 against NEILA foes. The Stags knocked off fourth-ranked Hartford 10-9 on Tuesday afternoon, while also earning wins over Quinnipiac and Vermont this season.

For the seventh time this season the Stags man-down defense was perfect, not allowing Hartford a goal in two extra-man chances. Fairfield has held its last two opponents scoreless in extra-man chances and has successfully killed off its last 10 man-down situations. The Stags did not allow an opponent an extra-man goal in the first three games of the year until Villanova went 2-7. The Stags then were a perfect 6-6 in man-down situations against Vermont and Air Force.

Fairfield heads out on the road for its final two regular season games of the year with a spot in the ECAC Lacrosse League Tournament on the line. The Stags will play at Ohio State, in the Showdown in the Shoe on April 23, before closing out the season at Denver on April 30. The game at Ohio State will air live on the Big Ten Network.
