The Fairfield University men's lacrosse team dropped an 8-7 decision to ECAC Lacrosse League host Hobart College on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Stags to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Statesmen improve to 3-4 and are now 1-0 in ECAC action.
Jordan Greenfield (Dover, Mass.) tallied his second goal of the game, unassisted, with 3:23 to play in the third quarter, to break the games second tie and give Fairfield a 6-5 advantage. The Stags would extend that lead to two goals, 7-5, when
Eric Warden (Glen Mills, Pa.) tallied an unassisted goal with 13 seconds to play in the period. Hobart would score the only three goals of the final stanza, with Alex Love netting the game-winner with 3:00 to play in regulation.
Marshall Johnson (Canandaigua, N.Y.) won the ensuing face-off and the Stags put three shots on net in the final minutes, but could not tally the equalizer.
Sam Snow (Bainbridge, Wash.) tallied a team-high three points, scoring twice and assisting on Greenfield's man-up goal in the second quarter. That tally gave the Stags a 2-1 lead (10:42), which
Brent Adams (Norwalk, Conn.) made 3-1 with an even strength goal 82 seconds later. Love tallied his first goal of the game at the 6:05 mark of the second quarter to make the halftime score 3-2 Fairfield.
Charlie Cipriano (Williston Park, N.Y.) made a season-high 14 saves in the game, while holding an opponent to eight or fewer goals for the sixth-time in eight games. Evan Kirk stopped 13 shots in net for Hobart to earn the win.
Mike White had a game-high four points, all assists, to lead Hobart. Tyler Simmons had two goals and an assist, while Love and Sam Miller both touched net twice. Hobart outshot the Stags 48-46 for the game and cleared the ball 15-17.
Fairfield won the ground ball battle, 31-30, marking the first time this season it has accomplished that feat. The Stags cleared 15-20 on the day and committed 11 turnovers. The Statesmen won 10-17 face-offs on the afternoon while turning the ball over 10 times.
The Stags went 2-5 in extra man situations, while holding Hobart scoreless in 5-7 man-down situations.
Fairfield returns home on Saturday, April 2 when it hosts ECAC foe Bellarmine University at 1 p.m.
