Field Hockey Beats Vermont, 2-1

BURLINGTON, Vt.
– The Fairfield University field hockey team captured their first win at conference foe University of Vermont this afternoon, 2-1.

The Stags and the Catamounts were scoreless for the first 15 minutes of the game.  Vermont struck first taking the 1-0 lead after sophomore Colleen Slaughter's goal assisted by Allison Barnaby.  Just over a minute later at the 16:35 mark, Fairfield took a penalty corner resulting in a tie game.  Freshman Felicitas Heinen put the ball into the net on an assist by Marit Westenberg.  The score held for the remainder of the period.

At the start of the second half, Westenberg finalized the scoring for the day with an assist by Shealyn Testa.  Fairfield's defense held Vermont for the rest of the game and came out with their first conference win and improving their record to 9-7, 1-3 in the America East.  Vermont dropped to 6-10, 0-4 in conference play after a game where the Stags outshot the Catamounts 15-12. 

The Stags return to play next weekend with back to back home games finishing out their regular season.  On Saturday, October 29 Fairfield will take on Boston University at 2 p.m. followed with Liberty University on Sunday at 11 a.m.
