Field Hockey Earns Second Consecutive Win In Home

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Amanda Sullivan scores twice to lift Fairfield past Lehigh University. The Stags came from behind to avenge their 2009 overtime loss, beating Lehigh University 2-1 in their first home game of the season.

The Mountain Hawks put pressure on the Stags right from the starting whistle as Kimberly Eng's shot got by Maddy Sposito off a penalty corner at the 11:59 mark. Amanda Sullivan answered right back as she dribbled past Lehigh's goalkeeper after receiving a perfectly placed long pass from Marit Westenberg. Once tied, the Stags never looked back as they gained momentum and took control of the game.

Fairfield nearly doubled Lehigh's penalty corners 11-6, while both the offense and defense dominated the second half. The Stags offense took 11 shots alone in the second period, with a game total of 16 on cage. Along with Sullivan's four shots on goal, Marit Westenberg, and Anne Nieuwenhuis also kept the pressure on offensively with five shots apiece, with all three combining for 14 of the team's 20 total. Lehigh goalkeeper, Jessica Miller had a solid performance with nine second half saves, adding to her 13 total, but it was not enough to tame the Stags constant attack. Amanda Sullivan notched her second goal, unassisted, at the 40:08 mark to put the game away. The second consecutive win also marked the second game in row the Stags defense have shut down their opponent, holding them to zero shots in the second half.

The win improves Fairfield's overall record to 2-3 as the Stags look to continue the winning streak when they travel across town to play at Sacred Heart University on September 10. The game time is set at 4pm.
