GREELEY, Colo. – The Fairfield University volleyball team notched its first win of the season with a 3-1 (25-23, 27-25, 14-25, 25-18) victory over South Dakota on the opening day of play at the Hampton Inn & Suites Northern Colorado Classic.
Freshman
Rachel Romansky (Denver, Colo.) posted her first career double-double, tallying a match-high 41 assists along with 11 digs. Sophomore
Brianna Dixion (Long Beach, Calif.) posted 13 kills while senior
Lauren Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) added 10 kills. Freshman
Hayley Moyer (Riverside, Calif.) finished with nine kills and three total blocks.
Defensively, sophomore
Kara Reis (Ramona, Calif.) notched 18 digs while junior
Haililani Pokipala (Honolulu, Hawaii) had 17 digs. Pokipala also had nine kills on the day.
The Stags (1-3) trailed most of the first set until Moyer tied things up at 21-21 with a kill. Consecutive attack errors by South Dakota (2-4) gave Fairfield a two-point lead which they would not relinquish. In the second frame, Fairfield jumped out to a 9-3 lead, but South Dakota chipped away, tying the match at 18-18. The two teams battle back and forth, but with the score knotted at 25-25, junior
Alex Lopez (Denver, Colo.) came through with an ace and Pokipala followed with a kill to give the Stags the win.
The Coyotes took the third set, 25-14, but the Stags regrouped in the fourth taking the set, 25-18, to put the match away.
Fairfield continues action at the Northern Colorado Classic this afternoon with a 4:30pm (MDT) match against Georgia.
