The Fairfield University women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to visiting non-conference foe University of Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Stags to 3-3 on the season, while the Minutewomen improve to 3-2 overall.
UMass scored the game-winning goal in the 32
nd minute as Meghan Collins (North Wales, Pa.) crossed the ball from the touch line to the far post where Ashley Hamel (Gansevoort, N.Y.) knocked the ball home. The Minutewomen got a second goal as the first-half was winding down as Deanna Colarossi (Burlington, Ontario) took control of the ball inside the box and shot over the head of
Kelly Boudreau (Farmington, Conn.).
Fairfield controlled the ball early in the second half, but was unable to put the ball in the back of the net. UMass made the score 3-0 at 58:53 on a goal by Blair Ferry (Kensington, Conn.). Ferry controlled the rebound of a shot from the foot of Therese Smith (Holyoke, Mass.), with Boudreau had dove to make the save, but was unable to control. Colarossi scored her second goal of the game at 86:42 pushing a pass from Smith between
Kasey Cox (West Chester, Pa.) and the far post.
UMass out shot Fairfield 20-11 for the game, including a 14-3 advantage in the first-half, and held a 12-7 edge in shots on goal. The Stags had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks, and both teams committed nine fouls.
Boudreau made seven saves, allowing three goals, in playing the first 77:24 of the game in goal for Fairfield. Cox, who made her collegiate debut, allowed one goal in 12:36 of play. Emily Cota played the entire 90 minutes for UMass, making seven saves in posting the clean sheet.
Fairfield returns to action on Thursday, September 16 when it travels to Stony Brook. That game is set for 7 p.m.
