COLLEGE PARK, Md. –
The Fairfield University volleyball team opened play at the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Terrapin Volleyball Invitational with a tough 3-0 (13-25, 14-25, 20-25) loss to Tulane this evening. Senior Lauren Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) tallied a team-high 11 kills for the Stags.
Junior Haililani Pokipala (Honolulu, Hawaii) had five kills and four digs while freshman Rachel Romansky (Denver, Colo.) had 13 assists and seven digs. Rookie Hayley Moyer (Riverside, Calif.) had four kills and three total blocks.
 
In its first win of the season, Tulane (1-6) hit .495 for the match, committing just four attack errors while pounding out 49 kills. The Stags (1-7) were held to a .137 attack percentage for the match. Blocks were even at three apiece.
 
The Green Wave controlled from the beginning in sets one and two. After the break, the Stags forced seven ties and two lead changes in the decisive third set. Trailing 15-9, Fairfield scratched their way back and tied the frame at 18-18 on an ace by junior Lauren Balmert (Cranberry Twp., Pa.). Afterservice error by the Stags,Hughes tied the set once again with a kill. Tulane, however, posted back-to-back kills and closed out the match on a 4-0 run.
 
Fairfield resumes play at the Terrapin Invitational tomorrow, September 11. The Stags face host Maryland at 12:30pm followed by Penn at 4:30pm. Gametracker is available for all matches while live video is available for Fairfield's match against the Terps by visiting the Tournament Central page.
