Volleyball Falls To Syracuse 3-1

HAMILTON, N.Y. –
The Fairfield University volleyball team fell to Big East foe Syracuse University, 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-19) this evening at the Colgate Classic. Sophomore Brianna Dixion (Long Beach, Calif.) and junior Haililani Pokipala (Honolulu, Hawaii) each notched double-digit kills on the night.
 
Dixion tallied a match-best 15 kills while Pokipala tallied 14 kills, one shy of tying a career high. Freshman Hayley Moyer (Riverside, Calif.) and junior Kendal Dirkin (Oak Park, Ill.) each added six kills while senior Lauren Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) added four. Freshman Rachel Romansky (Denver, Colo.) assisted on 39 of the Stags' 49 kills while adding four kills of her own.
 
The Stags erased an early five-point deficit in the first set to tie the game 10-10 on a kill by Moyer. Syracuse answered with a 6-1 run to make the score 16-11. Fairfield battled back once again and tied the frame, 19-19. Pokipala put the Stags on top 22-20 with back-to-back kills and Kara Reis (Ramona, Calif.) made it a three point lead with an ace. Fairfield held on and took the set 25-23.
 
In the second set, the Orange used a 5-1 run at the midway point to pull ahead 18-11. The Stags rallied late to cut the gap to 21-20, but Syracuse closed out the set on a 4-1 run. The Orange controlled from the onset in the third stanza and came away with the 25-13 victory.
 
After a close start, Syracuse used a big 8-3 run in the fourth set to pull ahead 21-13. The Orange closed out the match with the 25-19 victory.
