Make It A Double: Yoshida Defends Second MAAC Titl

BALTIMORE, Md. - Fairfield University sophomore Michelle Yoshida (Kaneohe, Hawaii) successfully defended her 200-yard freestyle title, marking her second gold medal of the 2010 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Swimming and Diving Championships, this evening. In all, 11 Stags qualified for Friday's finals in their respective events and three program records were set.

Yoshida posted a time of 1:51.99 to capture the 200y free, just .44 seconds off last year's winning time. Yesterday, Yoshida defended her 50y free crown with a new program record of 23.66 seconds. She will seek the trifecta tomorrow as she competes in the 100y free. Freshman Caitlin Moran (West Henrietta, N.Y.) finished tenth in the 200y free with a time of 157.40.

Freshman Cacky Keating (Chatham, N.J.) placed fifth in the women's 100y butterfly with a time of 58.79 seconds. In the prelims, Keating shattered an eight-year-old school record with a time of 58.43 seconds. The previous standard of 59.17 seconds was set in 2002 by Melissa Thompson. Sophomore Aly Criscuolo (Pittsford, N.Y.) placed 15th in the 100y fly with a time of 1:00.97.

Sophomore Lauren Kennedy (Belmont, Mass.) placed seventh in the women's 100y breaststroke with a time of 1:07.94.

Yoshida, Kennedy, Keating and Moran comprised the women's 200y medley relay team that placed third with a record-setting pace of 1:48.96.

Sophomore Norah Gentile (East Hartford, Conn.) finished 15th in the women's 100y backstroke with a time of 1:02.81.

In the men's 400y IM, junior Jonathan O'Connor (Norwalk, Conn.) captured the B final with a time of 4:15.56 while freshman Andrew Hiss (Freehold, N.J.) placed 12th with a personal best of 4:16.71.

In the men's 100y breaststroke, sophomore Brian Friedlander (River Edge, N.J.) placed tenth with a time of 1:00.20 while junior Charlie Helm (Cheshire, Conn.) took 14th with a time of 1:00.81.

Sophomore Andrew Robinson (Manalapan, N.J.) swam back-to-back events and picked up points for the Stags with 15th place finishes in the men's 100y fly and the 200y free. He posted a time of 52.57 seconds in the 100y fly and a time of 148.25 in the 200y free.

Senior Boris Romanovsky along with Friedlander, Robinson, and sophomore Greg Bellizzi (Edison, N.J.) set the program record in the men's 200y medley relay with a time of 1:37.36.

In the men's 1000y freestyle, sophomore Tommy Peters (Basking Ridge, N.J.) finished 18th with a personal best of 10:14.81. Sophomore George Daniolos (Shelton, Conn.) had a time of 11:03.42 while freshman Matt Palmer (Winsted, Conn.) clocked a personal best with a time of 11:53.64. In the women's 1000y freestyle, junior Katie Merz (Absecon, N.J.) posted a time of 11:33.50 and was followed by freshman Brigitte Germain (Scranton, Pa.) in 11:35.65, a personal best, Colleen Wilson (Niantic, Conn.) in 11:54.42, and freshman Barbara Mangino (Forest Hills, N.Y.) in 12:41.71.

The women's 800y freestyle relay of freshman Megan Reilly (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.), Germain, junior Allison Russoniello (Middletown, N.J.), and Gentile posted a time of 8:14.62. The men's 800y freestyle relay of Peters, sophomore Stefan Toi (Newtown, Conn.), Robinson, and freshman Paul Bimmler (Reading, Mass.) had a time of 7:10.96 to finish sixth.

After two days of competition, both the Fairfield men's and the women's teams stand in seventh place. The men have 186 points and trail Canisius by five points while Loyola leads with 554.5. The women have 190 points while Marist leads with 653.

FRIDAY'S PRELIMS

In the prelims of the women's 3-meter diving, senior Hillary Urbancic (Concord, Mass.) had a score of 123.75 while freshman Kim Pettit (Westwood, Mass.) posted a mark of 82.70.

In the prelims of the women's 400y IM, junior Sasha Campbell (Old Greewich, Conn.) had a time of 5:03.23.

In the prelims of the women's 100y fly, several Stags had personal bests. Sophomore Caroline Menapace (Ambler, Pa.) posted a time of 1:04.26 and was followed by sophomore Sam Distler (Glens Falls, N.Y.) in 1:04.41 and senior Marina Meliones (Wayland, Mass.) in 1:09.52.

In the prelims of the men's 100y fly, Romanovsky just missed the cut with a time of 53.29 seconds while Bellizzi was close behind with a personal best of 53.66 seconds. Toi finished in 54.18 seconds while sophomore Anthony Caserta (Youngstown, N.Y.) clocked a time of 58.03 seconds. Freshman Jack Potter (Potomac, Md.) had a time of 1:04.56.

In the prelims of the women's 200y free, Reilly posted a time of 2:04 while Germain had a personal best of 2:06.16. Freshman Megan McGuire (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) also had a personal best with a time of 2:07.03 while Merz finished in 2:10.35. Sophomore Brenna Dean (Edison, N.J.) and junior Sam Ceglia (Glen Cove, N.Y.) also had personal bests finishing in 2:04.20 and 2:04.30, respectively.

In the prelims of the men's 200y free, Bimmler posted a personal best of 147.05, just missing the cut. Peters finished in 1:49.61 and was followed by sophomore Brendan Sarpu (South Windsor, Conn.) in 1:49.73, sophomore Kenny Muti (Walpole, Mass.) in 1:52.66, and Daniolos in 1:58.82.

In the prelims of the women's 100y breaststroke, freshman Amanda Gilsey (Eatontown, N.J.) and Criscuolo just missed the cut. Gilsey posted a personal best of 1:12.03 while Criscuolo was close behind in 1:12.19. Freshman Liz Garvey (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) finished in 1:12.24 and was followed by Russoniello in 1:12.44, Meliones in a personal best of 1:14.85, and freshman MJ Baker (Westford, Mass.) in 1:19.05.

In the prelims of the men's 100y breaststroke, freshman Tim McCann (Hackettstown, N.J.) posted a personal best of 1:04.49.

In the prelims of the women's 100y backstroke, numerous Stags posted personal bests. Sophomore Emily Kelly (Haddon Heights, N.J.) had a time of 1:04.13 while Menapace finished in 1:04.85. Mangino posted a time of 1:08.29 and was followed by freshman Olivia Johnson (Westford, Mass.) in 1:08.89, freshman Annie O'Halloran (Fanwood, N.J.) in 1:08.95, and freshman Celeste Tallarico (Port Washington, N.Y.) in 1:11.36.

In the prelims of the men's 100y back, Romanovsky and Hiss swam well but just missed the cut. Romanovsky finished in 55.65 seconds while Hiss finished in 55.81 seconds. Sophomore Kevin Richard (Shelton, Conn.) posted a personal best of 1:04.17.
