FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University volleyball team picked up its fifth-straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) victory with an impressive 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-14) victory over Marist College this afternoon at Alumni Hall.
Fairfield (6-10; 5-0 MAAC), which increased its home win streak to 12 matches, hit .360 as a team while holding Marist (7-10; 2-3 MAAC) hit minus-.034 attack percentage on the day. The Stags also out-blocked the Red Foxes, 8-2.
Sophomore
Brianna Dixion (Long Beach, Calif.) led all players with 10 kills on a career-best .600 hitting along with a season-high five total blocks. Freshman
Hayley Moyer (Riverside, Calif.) also got in on the blocking action, as she notched a career-best six total blocks to go along with seven kills on .429 hitting.
Junior
Kendal Dirkin (Oak Park, Ill.) had seven kill with no errors for a .583 attack percentage. Senior
Lauren Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and junior
Haililani Pokipala (Honolulu, Hawaii) each delivered six kills while Pokipala added 11 digs. Freshman
Rachel Romansky (Denver, Colo.) had 31 assists and three kills.
Marist led 12-11 early in the first set, but Dixion blasted a kill to tie the match up and Hughes followed with another kill to give the Stags the lead. Junior
Lauren Balmert (Cranberry Twp., Pa.) added back-to-back service aces to extend the lead to 15-12 and Fairfield would not trail the rest of the match.
The Stags came out firing in the second set, going on a 13-2 run to start. Fairfield never looked back, cruising to the 25-10 victory. The third set was tied 3-3 when Fairfield rattled off four straight points. That was all the room the Stags needed as they rolled to the 25-14 win.
Fairfield returns to action tomorrow, October 3, when they Stags travel to Iona.
