FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their 2010-11 campaign with a tough loss to ACC foe Boston College this afternoon at the RecPlex. The men's team fell 160-141 while the women's team fell 172-139.
Juniors
Brian Friedlander (River Edge, N.J.) and
Michelle Yoshida (Kaneohe, Hawaii), sophomore
Cacky Keating (Chatham, N.J.), and freshman
Moe Osmulski (Rumson, N.J.) were all double-winners for the Stags.
Friedlander captured the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:08.96 and the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:28.52. Yoshida was victorious in the 100m freestyle with a time of 58.94 seconds, breaking her own program (59.42). Yoshida also captured the 50m free with a time of 27.10 seconds, just four-tenths off her program record. Keating posted a victory in the 200m fly with a time of 2:29.43 and in the 100mfly with a time of 1:07.79. In her Fairfield debut, Osmulski won the 400m IM with a time of 5:18.87 and the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:48.93.
Four other Stags posted first place finishes on the day as well. Sophomore
Paul Bimmler (Reading, Mass.) captured the 50m free with a time of 24.30 seconds, just .13 seconds off the program record. He also picked up first place points in the 100m fly with a time of 1:02.68 and finished second in the 100m free with a time of 54.93 seconds. Freshman
Cody Parker (Ocean Twp., N.J.) won the 400m free with a time of 4:22.60 and was fourth in the 200 free with a time of 2:04.73. Junior
Stefan Toi (Newtown, Conn.) won the 200m IM with a time of 2:18.28. On the women's side, senior
Katie Merz (Absecon, N.J.) won the 400m free with a time of 4:44.89 and placed third in the 200m free with a time of 2:16.97.
In her first meet as a Stag, freshman
Suzy Lawlor (North Wales, Pa.) placed second in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:52.94 and third in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:18.93. Sophomore
Caitlin Moran (West Henrietta, N.Y.) placed third in the 100m free with a time of 1:02.90.
On the boards, senior
Brett Carisio (Cheshire, Conn.) took second on the men's 3-meter with a score of 177.45. On the 1-meter, Carisio notched a score of 210.75. Sophomore
Ryan Krebs (East Williston, N.Y.) placed third on the 3-meter with a score of 175.43 and forged a personal best on the 1-meter finishing with a score of 191.55. For the women, freshman
Abigail Sanders (Falls Church, Va.) took third on the 1-meter with a score of 195.83 and had a score of 131.10 on the 3-meter. Sophomore
Kim Pettit (Westwood, Mass.) had a score of 89.35 on the 1-meter and a mark of 93.90 on the 3-meter.
In the women's 200m medley relay, the quartet of Yoshida, Lawlor, Keating, and Moran finished second with a time of 2:04.81. In the men's 200m medley relay, Andrew Hiss (Freehold, N.J.), Friedlander, Andrew Robinson (Manalapan, N.J.), and Bimmler finished third with a time of 1:52.52.
In the women's 200m freestyle relay, Moran, Keating, Lawlor, and Yoshida had a time of 1:53.48. In the men's 200m freestyle relay, Brendan Sarpu (South Windsor, Conn.), Tim McCann (Hackettstown, N.J.), Parker, and Kevin Greener (Chatham, N.J.) finished with a time 1:42.12.
Fairfield returns to action on October 15 at Holy Cross.
